Denville Township
Mixed Data Center Policies
New Jersey requires large data centers to cover much of their electricity costs and offer demand flexibility; reporting and construction rules add paperwork and costs. Tax incentives are available only to qualifying projects, while regulators study possible electricity-cost effects.
Rating and summary from New Jersey statewide as there are no scored current or future laws outside temporary restrictions for Denville Township.

What this means
If enacted, the measure would ban high-intensity computing facilities, including AI data centers and crypto-mining facilities, in every zoning district and would bar them as accessory uses too (“prohibit artificial intelligence data centers”). Ordinary server rooms and incidental IT equipment would remain allowed, but that exception does not offset the ban on data centers covered by the definitions.
People behind it
- Jason L. Kasler
Planner named as author of zoning-update memo (Exhibit A).
- Matthew N. Bansch
Municipal clerk identified in draft attestation (packet).
Restrictions & requirementsHide restrictions & requirements2
Would ban covered high-intensity computing in every zone, including accessory uses and home occupations (proposed prohibition).
Would prohibit AI data nodes, aggregate equipment across parcels/buildings/tenants, and withhold permits (node and anti-segmentation provisions).
Benefits & exceptionsHide benefits & exceptions1
Proposed exclusion preserves ordinary incidental server rooms and regulated telecommunications infrastructure (scope limitation). Not a standalone-data-center incentive.
