City of Longmont
Anti-Data Center Policies
Longmont’s enacted ordinance is described as barring hyperscale data centers in all zoning districts, including expansions or added utility service that exceed size limits; smaller centers are exempt. Its description uses future tense despite the enacted status.
current law · City of LongmontProhibits hyperscale data centers in all zoning districts, defined by projected peak electrical demand of at least 5% of Platte River Power Authority’s nameplate capacity or 100 megawatts, whichever is lower.Longmont Ordinance O-2026-34 (2026)
What this means
The measure would prohibit hyperscale data centers in every zoning district, and block expansions or added utility service that push a facility or coordinated campus over the size threshold. Smaller data centers are not covered by this ban, so the measure is a severe restriction on large projects rather than a ban on all data centers.

Restrictions & requirementsHide restrictions & requirements1
Hyperscale data centers are prohibited in all zoning districts. No expansion, additional phase, or additional utility-service approval may cause a data center, campus, or aggregated coordinated operation to reach the threshold: projected peak electrical demand equal to or greater than the lower of 5% of Platte River Power Authority’s nameplate capacity or 100 MW, whether at initial operation or through phased expansion. Hyperscale data centers are prohibited in all zoning districts.
Benefits & exceptionsHide benefits & exceptions1
The new prohibition applies to “hyperscale data centers,” defined by an electrical-demand threshold: at least 100 MW or 5% of Platte River Power Authority’s nameplate capacity, whichever is lower. Facilities that remain below that threshold are outside this specific ban, though they remain subject to other applicable requirements. the thresholds established in this subsection
